A Lighter Side of History: A talk and demonstration of Teochew Metal Rod Puppetry

Perform Room,
Level 3
1.30pm
3.30pm or 5.30pm (1hr per session)

The Teochew Metal Rod Puppetry is a form of performing art with a rich history. Distinctive and intricately crafted, the puppets are controlled by the use of metal rods attached to its back and limbs. It was once popular in Singapore and Malaysia, but the puppet opera has seen its gradual decline in recent decades.

A Lighter Side of History presents Ms Ling Goh, a master of the trade from Penang, who will deliver a talk on its history and art. Ms Ling Goh will also give a demonstration personally – offering an up-close glimpse of the performing art that is now rarely seen.

*This programme will be delivered in Mandarin.

About Ms Ling Goh: Ms Ling Goh is a veteran Teochew Metal Rod Puppet performer from Penang, Malaysia. She is the director of the Teochew Puppet & Opera House in Penang and has performed in many countries. Her puppet troupe Kim Giak Low Choon Teochew Puppet Group had garnered various awards and recognitions internationally.
